International Water Management Institute
IWMI’s mission is to provide evidence-based solutions to sustainably manage water and land resources for food security, people’s livelihoods and the environment. IWMI works in partnership with governments, civil society and the private sector to develop scalable agricultural water management solutions that have a tangible impact on poverty reduction, food security and ecosystem health.
IWMI is a key partner in the development of the water accounting framework using remote sensing. It supported the work on the initial development of the WA+ framework through the PhD research of Poolad Karimi. In more recent years, it jointly implemented an ADB funded project on "Expanding support to Water Accounting in River Basins and Water Productivity Measurements in Irrigation Projects" with IHE Delft. IWMI further applied the WA+ framework in various river basins and countries, including the Mara, Upper Niger basins.

Expanding support to Water Accounting in River Basins and Water Productivity Measurements in Irrigation Projects
The project focussed on making the best use of remote sensing data and information to inform decision making through assessing the water resources situation at basin level (Water Accounting – WA+) and to assess the spatial (and temporal) variability of land and water productivity in irrigation schemes (Water Productivity). The analyses contributed to various ADB funded projects in six countries (Cambodia, India, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Philippines and Sri Lanka).
