Water Accounting Plus Mongolia

In order to support IWRM planning in Mongolia, Water Accounting Plus (WA+) was introduced through an application in the Kherlen River Basin and trainings were provided in the production of water accounts and their interpretation to members of the relevant institutions. In addition, guidelines were developed for the use and implementation of water accounting to support sustainable water resources management in Mongolia.

euwaterstars

EU Water Stars

The IHE Delft Water Accounting team supported the EU Water Stars project in capacity building of staff of the water accounting unit of the Ministry of Water and Irrigation in Egypt in evaluating remote sensing data products and adapting WA+ tools to develop a homegrown water accounting plus system that was tested for the Fayoum area and Nile Delta. In the final stages of the project a reporting system was designed for WA+ to support monitoring several indicators of the Egyptian National Water Resources Management Plan.

Capacity Building for Water Accounting

In collaboration with the FAO under the Water efficiency, productivity and sustainability in the NENA regions (WEPS-NENA) project, IHE Delft designed and implemented a tailor made training programme to support national stakeholders from 8 NENA countries on conducting Water Accounting and Water Auditing analyses. Based on the materials developed under this project, a self paced open access MOOC on Water Accounting and Water Auditing was set up and launched in August 2022.

Remote sensing for water productivity

By providing near real time pixel information, WaPOR opens the door for service-providers to assist farmers in obtaining more reliable yields and improving their livelihoods. The first phase of the WaPOR project focussed on developing an operational database, covering Africa and the Near East to monitor agricultural water and land productivity. IHE Delft implemented at various stages quality assessments of the database as well as implementing 5 water accounting case studies. Numerous professionals were trained in accessing the WaPOR data and to do basic analyses on water accounting and water productivity analyses. A self paced open course ware was developed on Water Productivity and Water Accounting using WaPOR.

Expanding support to Water Accounting in River Basins and Water Productivity Measurements in Irrigation Projects

The project focussed on making the best use of remote sensing data and information to inform decision making through assessing the water resources situation at basin level (Water Accounting – WA+) and to assess the spatial (and temporal) variability of land and water productivity in irrigation schemes (Water Productivity). The analyses contributed to various ADB funded projects in six countries (Cambodia, India, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Philippines and Sri Lanka).

Rapid Assessment of Water Accounts in Lake Urmia, Iran

As part of FAO led Integrated Programme for Sustainable Water Resources Management in Urmia Lake Basin (GCP/IRA/066/JPN) that aims at contributing to the mandate of the Urmia Lake Restoration Program (ULRP), IHE Delft implemented a rapid assessment using WA+ tools.

Demonstrating Water Accounting and Water Productivity analyses to support Country Water Assessments

The overall objective of this pilot and capacity building project was to help improve planning processes of the ADB investments in water security and irrigation systems, and enhance capacity to countries on the concepts of Crop Water Productivity.

Water Accounting+: independent estimates of water flows, fluxes, stocks, consumption and services

Supported by DUPC, a framework for a new Water Accounting methodology (WA+) that is based on global-scale public-domain datasets was developed. Its objective was to strive to achieve equitable and transparent water governance for all users and a sustainable water balance.
